How to Organize Your Closet
Most of us at one time or another have not been able to find a specific piece of clothing when we needed it. Or, we’ve had to rummage through a cluttered closet to find a certain top or skirt. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. With time and patience, we can organize our closets so we don’t have to spend an extra minute looking for anything!
Here are a few simple steps to organizing your clothing so that every piece is easily accessible and your closet stays neat and tidy.
1.Empty your closet.
Start by removing everything from your closet. You will then have an empty space to organize your clothes. Begin by sorting and organizing the contents of your closet and divide them into the following categories:
Toss
Sell or donate
or
Keep
Throw away anything that may be torn beyond repair, irreparably soiled, or worn too much to be reused. If you find usable clothes that you no longer like or don’t fit, consider selling them or donating them to a charitable organization. Then, there are pieces you’re not sure you’ll wear, but want to hold on to anyway. Maybe they have sentimental value to you, or clothes you think you might wear in the future. Stick with them for now. The last pile is the clothes you wear regularly and no doubt want to keep.
Try on your clothes one by one if it helps you decide what you want to do with each one. While this may seem like a daunting task, it will save you decision-making time in the future.
- Organize your closet
Take a minute to dust off and clean your closet. Once your space is ready, you can further organize your “keeper” pile of clothes. Sort them:
By Season
If you are currently experiencing summer, then your winter clothes can be stored elsewhere. These are often bulky and take up too much space, so consider putting them in a suitcase or box and pulling them out when the season arrives. If not, store them on the top shelf of your closet.
By Type
Separate tops, pants, skirts and dresses. If you work out regularly, you can also keep a separate pile for your workout clothes.
By Occasion
Separate party wear from evening wear, office wear from loungewear. This will especially save you a lot of time when you’re getting dressed for work in the morning or trying to figure out what to wear to a special dinner or event.
By Color
If you feel more strongly about your closet aesthetic, this is an option.
Once you have done this, you can plan where you want to be in your closet. Always remember that the clothes you wear the most should get the most convenient space! This means that if you have to dress for work 5 days a week, make sure those pieces are right in front of you when you open your closet. If you use your workout clothes every day, your workout clothes should also find an easily accessible space. You can store less-worn clothing, such as party dresses, in the back. Use shelf dividers to separate piles of folded clothes and keep them from tipping over.
Hang your best and most delicate clothes on wooden hangers. This will ensure that your clothes keep their shape and don’t wrinkle. You can even save time mixing and matching pieces by keeping your daily work clothes on hangers. Don’t forget that there is room underneath the hanging clothes! You can stack a few pieces that match the clothes on the rack, or you can place garbage cans for certain types of clothing, such as delicate hand-embroidered tops, swimsuits or even pajamas.
Drawers are the perfect space to store underwear and socks. Small and delicate, they need the right amount of dedicated space.
The back of the closet door usually expands your storage space. You can hang heavy items such as coats or bathrobes on hooks, or the same hook can support belts, scarves and ties. They can also support shoe pockets for your various shoes.
- Invest in quality closet equipment
Providing your closet with quality equipment will help ensure that your clothes last longer. Slim hangars with rounded edges, smooth hooks, baskets and shelf dividers can go a long way in keeping your closet tidy and your clothes in good condition.
There you have it – a neatly organized closet that saves you time! You can do a complete closet reorganization every 6 months to keep your clothes edited and use your less worn clothes more frequently.
