2024 Fashion Trends That Will Be Ubiquitous in ‘9, According to Stylists
As we dive headfirst into the new year, it’s a good time to take stock of your existing closet to see which pieces have gone out of style, which can be reinvented, and which pieces can be added to the mix. By 2024, experts say you can expect to see a continuation of ’90s-inspired closets, jelly accessories, and college prep, as well as some unexpected moments of inspiration-such as grandpa, jazz, and vintage femininity.
01 Polished College Style
While the “New Crown Epidemic Era” has allowed us to go into full leprechaun mode and encourage casual dress, fashion professionals say the industry is now experiencing an outright resistance to ultra-casual styles.
“Look for sophisticated shapes and a touch of preparation and polish,” says Niki English, a stylist and costume designer with more than 15 years of industry experience. “Loose-fitting suits in individual colors and the return of the polo shirt symbolize the desire for this classic, crisp aesthetic.”
02 Quiet Luxury
Coinciding with the elegant collegiate aesthetic is quiet luxury, which is all about wearing pieces that look and feel super expensive but aren’t so flashy. Think perfectly tailored and high-quality materials with bling and branding. Also known as “old money style,” you can also dive into this 2024 fashion trend with accessories like bags, jewelry, and shoes.

03 Chic Grandpa
It’s time to officially say goodbye to coastal grandmas and welcome a new icon in their place: the eclectic grandpa. “Think vintage streetwear, chic cardigans, and customized clothing,” says Sydney Stanback, head of global trends and insights at Pinterest. She says search terms like “grandpa style” and “eclectic clothing style” have soared +60% and +130%, respectively.
04 Ultra-feminine
If the grandpa core didn’t hit the spot, then maybe the ultra-feminine style of 2024 is more your speed. The ultra-girly aesthetic is very much a sassy core, Barbie, ballet and cabin vibe. Pink and lace details, bows, pastels and floral prints too.
05 Volume and shape
Instead of super skinny jeans and short jackets, 2024 fashion experiments with volume, length and shape. You can expect exaggerated lengths to appear on all types of clothing, with maxi skirts, oversized long jackets, and even low-rise dresses once again becoming mainstream.
“Wide-legged jeans have given way to more tailored bottoms in flowing fabrics such as copper spandex, faience, and even satin, all with some sheen,” says English. “Why not pair them with a matching blazer for a head-to-toe ensemble.”
06 Jelly Fashion
Jelly accessories are poised for a significant resurgence as we move into 2024, where tributes to ’90s fashion continue to reign supreme. “By 2024, every aspect of our lives will be inspired by our favorite invertebrates,” says Steinbach. “Gen Z and Millennials are pushing this soft aesthetic and incorporating it into their style by looking for things like ‘jellyfish hats’ and ‘jellyfish hairstyles’.” Also very much in: jelly shoes.
07 Trending Colors
Still popular in 2024, capsule dressings are now updated with basics in crisp neutrals like black, gray, camel and white. These are accented by pops of color, says English, with favorites such as millennial pink (yes, it dominates), lavender purple, canary yellow, and pistachio green in a deep navy. “Refresh your existing closet by adding pops of color pieces to your neutral look, or make a bold statement by going head-to-toe with one color,” advises English.
08 Jazz Revival
If the ’90s are too new for you-been there, done that-maybe going back a little farther in time will satisfy your fashion appetite. Steinbach says the retro jazz look is gaining traction, and it extends beyond funk playlists to jazz-inspired clothing. Think shimmering wide-legged pants paired with modern revealing tops and oversized blazers, bell-sleeved sweaters, gold glitter corsets, silky floor-length halter dresses, and unabashed fringe. If you wear it to a jazz bar, it goes in.
09 Sustainability
As consumers become more familiar with the downsides of fast fashion, there is a growing interest in secondhand and thrifted goods, as well as brands that champion sustainable materials and practices and transparency.
“Look for recycled materials made from ocean plastic, or reclaimed materials such as bamboo, seaweed or other natural fibers,” says English. “There’s also a resurgence of wool, flax, hemp and other plant and animal fibers that were pushed aside during the rise of polyester.”
