Timeless 8 Summer Fashion Tips
Summer Love
When it comes to clothing, summer is my second favorite season and definitely love summer fashion. (In case you were wondering, my favorite season is fall. I love fall clothing! I love the colors of summer, the lightness of fabrics, and the freedom to walk through my closet at least 3 months out of the year.
You’ll find a lot of fashion blogs that talk about the latest trends, what’s popular now, what’s no longer popular, and what’s “in” now and what’s trending. Since I’m not interested in trends or buying clothes with a shelf life, I wanted to share with you 11 summer fashion tips that never go out of style. Think classic style, not trends. These style tips will work year after year.
8 Summer Fashion Tips
Lighter colors are better than darker colors
Not only will lighter colors keep you cooler (black absorbs more heat), but they also have a better summer vibe. I mean you can wear dark colors like black, charcoal, violet or navy blue, but it doesn’t have that light and airy feel that is synonymous with summer.
Natural makeup is best
If you ask me, there’s nothing worse than wearing a ton of makeup on a hot summer day. Light and natural makeup is the way to go for summer. Put away the heavy black eyeliner, dark eye shadow, heavy foundation and dark lipstick. Instead, use pretty neutral eyeshadows, tinted moisturizers and nude, pink or rose stains and tinted lip balms.
As for foundation, unless you’re going to a summer event, wear a tinted moisturizer. To add a gorgeous summer glow, add a touch of liquid highlighter to your summer makeup routine. Simply apply a little highlighter to your cheekbones, brow bones and the top of your nose.
Flowing tops, dresses and skirts are better than fitted
Summer calls for lightweight fabrics that flow with the wind. To exude a summer love vibe, opt for flowy clothes rather than anything tight-fitting. Look for garments made from lightweight cotton, silk, chiffon, lace or crochet. This goes for everything: dresses, skirts, tops, jumpsuits, and even shorts.
I suggest this for two reasons. First, it’s hot in the summer and wearing very form-fitting clothing can make you and your clothes sweat. Second, flowy clothing and summer go hand in hand.
If you only have one handbag, choose a neutral brown color
If you’re only going to buy one tote for the summer, go for a neutral earthy brown color. Look for a less structured summer tote that you will want to wear for many summers.
I’m wearing the tote in this outfit post this summer. It’s my go-to summer bag that compliments every summer outfit I own and I know I’ll be wearing it again next summer.
Strapless tops and dresses are always sexy
Every few years, strapless clothing becomes popular. All the stores stock them and everyone wears them. But strapless tops and dresses are trendy every summer. Don’t think of them as trendy or disposable because they really are fashion staples that you can wear every year.
I pull out a few strapless dresses every summer and I’m always adding new ones to my closet. They are great pieces to achieve an effortless summer style.
Hats are a great idea.
Everyone should own a hat! If you don’t own one, it’s probably because you haven’t found the perfect one for you! Not only do they show off a stylish summer vibe, but they also protect your face from the harmful sun.
I love wide brim straw tweed hats and rancher style hats. These look the best on me and provide the best shade other than beach hats. If you’re not sure what type of hat will work best for you, head to your local hat store (also known as a hat maker) and let the owner help you. It pays to go to a hat expert who knows what styles work best for different people.
Wear Earth Tone Jewelry
Put away the big personalized jewelry in dark or jewel tones, summer fashion calls for earth tone jewelry. Look for bracelets, necklaces and earrings in blues, golds, turquoise, pinks, browns, greens and even brightly patterned cotton bangles.
In the summer, I like to wear a ton of bangles and keep my earrings and necklaces simple. Usually, my necklace is a delicate, thin gold initial necklace and my earrings are gold studs.
Neutral colors will match your summer outfits (if not all of them) because of the overall lightness of summer outfits.
